Trendy Terminology or Unwavering Behavior

827490595_f5f2232faa_mWelcome to the first installment of CBD’s blog on Food/Ingredients by Chris Chleboun. As CBD’s resident specialist in all things Food Ingredients, Agriculture and Manufacturing (with years of experience working with top global marketers and manufacturers in the Food/Ingredients space) I have a lot to say. Starting with this:

Are we seeing an increase in “trendy terminology”, and “nutritional nomenclature”…or are we witnessing genuine, unwavering behavior that’s here to stay?

Buzz-worthy phrases such as “transparency”, “eco-friendly” and shrinking your “carbon footprint” are everywhere.  On a daily basis, the US FDA is challenged by increasing discussion of the “simplicity” movement (fewer ingredients, more informative and straightforward labels, don’t eat what you can’t pronounce), the emergence of “friendly bacteria” (pre-and pro-biotics), growing concern about food safety and corroborating proof.

Our world is now one where consumers actively seek out locally grown, farm-fresh vegetables and see the same value in Asian pears. If you don’t believe me, CBD’s ongoing proprietary study proves otherwise.

Increasingly, consumers want to know more about their food—where it was grown, what ingredients it contains, how it was packaged and the footprint its production has left on this earth.

The significance of good health is of growing more important to consumers and sound information is easy to find. Food Ingredient manufacturers need to be transparent, accountable, concise, and consistent in what they say. Because people have an emotional relationship with food as well as a biological need for it, truth in advertising is a must. When messaging is more important than brand, it all comes back to the product at hand.

This growing demand for transparency and accountability has the domino effect on other industries like agriculture (see CBD Agriculture posts), retail, and manufacturing to name a few.

Are you scared or are you prepared? More on that next week…
