LinkedIn & Twitter Cover Photos: Prep for Success

Remember when the Facebook Timeline transition happened? Empty cover photos were a dime a dozen. Blurred and distorted profile pictures clouded search results. And everyone was rushing to find creative—fast.

It was a prime moment for many Facebook Page managers. Some survived; others learned the real meaning of community management. And, everyone was educated on which brands were really monitoring day to day.

As a social media community manager and marketer, it’s just part of my job to be prepared. As big networks don’t always give warning before making a switch (I mean you, Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter!), this is easier said than done.

However, with a little time, perseverance and luck, you learn the tricks of the trade. And sometimes, this just boils down to knowing the right people, reading the right blogs or partnering with right agency to help.

The recent Twitter and LinkedIn layout change is a prime example.

If you didn’t know this already, both Twitter and LinkedIn have adopted their own version of Facebook’s Cover Photo. If you choose to utilize this feature, LinkedIn’s photo needs to be sized 646w x 220h pixels, no larger than 2 MB. On the flipside, Twitter allows a little more leeway, asking that the photo be at least 1200h x 600w pixels and no more than 5 MB.

While these changes are not mandatory, make sure you have temporary cover photos on hand. Again, remember Facebook Timeline. These things have a way of becoming mandatory. As a social media marketer and manager, you have to embrace that fact.

Take precautions for next time. (Yes, there will be a next time.) Constantly check LinkedIn and Twitter blog announcements. Set up a Google Alert with the keywords “LinkedIn” and “Twitter.”  And above all, remember that the more aware you are, the less likely your company platforms will unprepared. Knowledge is the key to success.
